USMC M4A2 "China Gal", Tarawa 1943

Wie ich bereits in meinem letzten Post angedeutet habe, arbeite ich seit einigen Monaten an einem Sherman M4A2 des USMC während der Schlacht um Tarawa.

Sehr empfehlenswert ist auch das Buch: "Marine Tank Battles in the Pacific" von Oscar E. Gilbert:
Einzig die Bilder in dem Buch sind grauenhaft schlecht abgedruckt.
Dazu habe ich mir noch die Bücher: "Tank Battles of the Pacific War" und "US Marine Corps tanks of WWII" von Steve Zaloga besorgt, die einen guten Einblick über die verwendeten Panzer des USMC bieten.
Zum Modell:
Anfangs plante ich einfach den Dragonbausatz 6062 M4A2 Tarawa zu verwenden, bis ich zufällig auf die wahnsinnig gute gemachte Website und den Blog von Paul Budzik gestoßen bin:

Als ich nun daran ging nach dem Bausatz 6231 Sherman Mk III “Sicily” zu suchen konnte ich leider keinen finden.
Rettung in der Not war mein guter Freund Peter Knaul, der mir den Bausatz schenkte.
Neben dem Bausatz besorgte ich mir noch folgendes Zubehör:

Geschützrohr und MGs - RB Model
Ätzteile - Voyager,
Kommandantenkuppel, Motorraumabdeckung, Hupe, Exhaust deflector - Tiger Model Designs,
Figuren - Warriors,
Köpfe - Hornet

Werkzeug - Formations,

plus ein paar kleinere Scratcharbeiten.

Wie bereits beschrieben, der Panzer wurde insgesamt zweimal lackiert (nach vorherigem entlacken), da ich das Weathering beim ersten Versuch komplett verhauen habe.
Komplett fertig ist er nach wie vor nicht.

As I´ve already said in my last post, I´ve been working on a Sherman M4A2 during the Battle of Tarawa for a few months now.

Highly recommended is the book:  "Marine Tank Battles in the Pacific" by Oscar E. Gilbert.
The photos in the book are awefully printed though.
Furthermore I bought the books: "Tank Battles of the Pacific War" and "US Marine Corps tanks of WWII" by Steve Zaloga, which offer a great insight in which tanks were used by the USMC during the battles of the Pacific.
Regarding the Model:
Right from the start I planned to use the DML kit 6062 M4A2 Tarawa, until I found Paul Budzik amazing Website and Blog:

While looking for the kit 6231 Sherman Mk. III "Sicily", I couldn´t get it anywhere. My saviour was my great friend Peter Knaul who gave me said kit.

Like I already said, the Tank was painted twice (after removing the paint), since I messed up the Weathering on the first run.
I´m not done with it yet.

Tarawa, November 1943

Nachdem ich die HBO Serie "The Pacific" gesehen habe wuchs in mir ein Interesse an den Schlachten im Pazifik-Krieg, speziell des USMC, heran. Im Laufe der Zeit besorgte ich mir diverse Bücher und Magazine die sich mit dem PTO (Pacific Theater of Operations) befassen, was mein Interesse noch vergrößerte. Dadurch beschloss ich mein Interessensgebiet, nachdem ich lange Jahre fast nur deutsche Modelle gebaut hatte, auszudehnen. Leider wird das Thema Marine Corps im zweiten Weltkrieg, von den Modellbauherstellern, immer noch sehr stiefmütterlich behandelt. Vor Jahren gab es mal eine sehr schöne Figurenserie von "Warriors", allerdings sind viele der Figuren nur noch schwer zu bekommen. Zwischenzeitlich gibt es allerdings einige neuere Figurensets von "Evolution", "Doug´s Miniatures" und auch von "Dragon". Fahrzeugmodelle sind wenige erhältlich die speziell auf das USMC gerichtet sind, was vielmals Umbauten oder Modifikationen erfordern. Vor einiger Zeit besorgte ich mir eine der "Warriors"-Figuren, mit dem Ziel sie auf einen Sherman M4A2 zu stellen. Leider habe ich mich bei den letzten Schritten der Alterung komplett verhauen und erstmal die Lust verloren an dem Modell verloren. Da ich die Figur allerdings schon fast fertig hatte beschloß ich sie auf eine kleine Base zu stellen.

After watching watching the HBO series "The Pacific" I grew an interest in the Battles of the Pacific, specially the ones fought by the USMC. During the time I took hold of several magazines and books, written about the PTO, which let me interest grew further. Sadly most kit manufacturers still treat the topic, USMC in WWII, still pretty stepmotherly. Years ago, there has been a great figure-series by "Warriors", but unfortunately they are hard to get now. Meanwhile though, there are some nice new Figures by "Evolution", "Doug´s Miniatures" and even DML. Kits of USMC vehicles are only a few, and most of them need Alterations or Modifications.
A while ago I got me one of the "Warriors"-figures, which I wanted to put on a Sherman M4A2. Unfortunately, on the last few steps of the Weathering, i made a mess of the kit and I lost interest on it (for a while).
Since the figure was almost finished, I decided to put it on a small base.
